Full Qualification in First Aid for Mental Health

Become a Fully Qualified First Aider for Mental Health via Distance Learning

All of our courses are FAA Accredited and Ofqual regulated.

  • • Study 100% via distance learning.

    • Benefit from live instructor-led training.

    • You will have direct access to a fully qualified First Aid for Mental Health Trainer and Assessor throughout your learning.

    • All training is guided by a fully qualified Trainer/Assessor.

    • The whole course takes approximately 14 hours to complete (webinars + self-study = 14 hours).

    • Your learning is assessed via a professional discussion on Zoom; this discussion will take place before the end of week five, and you will be sent the details of how to book this discussion in your welcome email.

    • You will receive a certificate to evidence your achievement, and an electronic email signature badge that you may use to identify yourself as a First Aider for Mental Health.

  • This course will train you, support you, and build your confidence in supporting someone who is experiencing mental distress. Much the same as a traditional first aider who is concerned with physical distress, a First Aider for Mental Health provides the same type of immediate help and support for emotional distress.

    You will learn:

    • What First Aid for Mental Health is.

    • How to identify the main Mental Health conditions someone might be experiencing when you could be called to support them

    • How to provide advice and how to start a conversation with someone experiencing a Mental Health condition, following a clear Action Plan.

  • • Stress

    • Drugs and alcohol

    • Depression

    • Post-traumatic stress disorder

    • Self-harm

    • Suicide

    • Eating disorders

    • Personality disorders

    • Bipolar disorder

    • Psychosis

    • Schizophrenia

    • Anxiety

  • Once registered, we send out all of the learning materials via email along with a welcome letter to guide you through your course. An electronic First Aid for Mental Health Manual is also sent to each learner.

The welcome letter will provide you with further information regarding live webinar joining instructions and how to book your assessment. Please do let us know via your registration form, which you will be sent, of any additional learning support you many need.

The live webinars are delivered via live Zoom webinars that fully train you in how to support someone in mental distress towards recovery.

The assessment can be booked using our online calendar (you will receive a link to this in your welcome letter) and must be done five weeks from when you receive your learning materials.

The assessment lasts for about 30 minutes and you will be asked 23 questions to demonstrate your understanding of the role, and of the different mental health conditions included on your course. This is done live via a Zoom meeting with an assessor. Sometimes people feel nervous about assessments, but we believe that it genuinely supports you to feel confident enough to assist someone who is experiencing mental distress and possible feelings of suicide. This is central and integral to our training and we will fully support and prepare you to successfully pass the assessment.

 FAQs

  • First Aid for Mental Health is a training course that we offer, which will give you the skills in how to help a person developing a mental health problem (including a substance use problem), experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis. For further information read our blog on the subject.

  • Sometimes it is known as Mental Health First Aid or FAMH or MHFA.

  • Like traditional First Aid, Mental Health First Aid does not teach people to treat or diagnose mental health or substance use conditions. Instead, our training teaches people how to offer initial support until appropriate professional help is received, or until the crisis resolves.

  • Yes, all of our learners receive accredited training certified and regulated by Ofqual, which is listed on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SCQF). All of our courses have been developed in association with the awarding organisation First Aid Awards (FAA). Some Mental Health First Aid Courses only award a certificate of attendance but ours is an actual qualification, which we think is much better.

  • Yes. You will receive one directly emailed to you shortly after you successfully complete your assessment

  • We think so, and our past learners think so too. We offer three live webinars on our live First Aid for Mental Health course, which will give you an opportunity to be a part of an online group; it will also give you the opportunity to practice scenarios and participate in discussions, and pose any questions you might have. Learners who register for the pre-recorded course will receive recordings of live webinars to aid their learning.

  • We usually accommodate a maximum of 16 people on any one of our live courses, online or face-to-face. On some occasions we can accommodate more people.

  • Yes, and we would be delighted to discuss any further courses you might feel are beneficial to you. Soon we will be introducing safeguarding training, please contact us to enquire

  • You must be 18 or over to do our courses. If you’d like us to train a group of young people under the age of 18, please contact us because in certain circumstances we can accommodate this

  • Our online/distance courses are open to anyone, anywhere across the world, but please check that the qualification is valid if you plan to use it outside of the UK.

  • We understand, and every learner having a positive experience of our training is important to us. We deliver all of our courses in a safe, supportive, thoughtful way and all of our trainers are very experienced in mental health. Sometimes learners bring real life experiences to the group discussions, but we always handle them sensitively and we will make sure that everyone feels safe and grounded throughout the training and ready to confidently and safely leave at the close of each course. The role of a First Aider for Mental Health is a specific role, which ensures the training is focused on performing only that role in a clear and specific way.
